The magical world of Oz

Elphaba – The principal character in the musical. Elphaba is the misunderstood witch, propagandized as an evil being because she stands up for what she believes in. Elphaba is an intelligent and willful woman with strong principals and standards, much unlike how she is portrayed in the Wizard of Oz, which is the story where she is the evil character.

GalindaGalinda is the snobby and spoiled popular former roommate of Elphaba in the story of Wicked. She is portrayed as the “Good Witch” because she is popular and well liked, conforming to the changing of the magical world of Oz. She is a charming, yet, ditzy girl, really quite the opposite of Elphaba who, in her own words, “has a brain.”
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz- The Wizard of Oz, unlike his kind and gentle-hearted persona as portrayed in the Wizard of Oz, the original adaptation, The Wizard of Oz in Wicked is a evil and tyrannical ruler of Oz that uses deceit and trickery to make Oz what he wants it to be. He was dropped into the world of Oz and made into a king overnight. Oz is the clear antagonist in the film.

FiyeroFiyero is the chief love intrest for Elphaba in the musical. Though he is engaged begrudgingly to Galinda, he still seems to have feelings for the young witch. He is portrayed as a strapping prince of the Winkie land. Later in the musical, he is arrested and presumably killed by the Wizard’s secret police because he is thought to have affiliations with the Wicked Witch. Fiyero is based off the character in the Wizard of Oz, the Scarecrow.

Boq – One of the characters of Wicked. He is a Munchkin who attends the university with Elphaba, Fiyero, Galinda and Nessarose. He falls in love with the vain Galinda, but uses Elphaba’s sister Nessarose to make her jealous. Though this fails because Galinda is in love with Fiyero, however, during this exchange, Nessarose falls in love with Boq and turns him to tin in anger when she learns that she was being used.

Nessarose – The sister of Elphab, disabled and confined to a wheelchair. She falls in love with Boq who uses her for his own purposes. Nessarose is a tragic character who is often embarrassed by her sister Elphaba. After she becomes the leader of the province, she slowly becomes evil, bitter about Boq and eventually turns him to tin after he loses his heart.
